Christantus Uche Fuels Dominant Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever continental campaign, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Without star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding win that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to seal straight passage to the last 16, especially after a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season proved outmatched even for a largely rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee dismissed the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then blazed a glaring chance, indicating there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
