Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these drugs need to be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle support.
