No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
